Universal Letter Writing Week

celebrates the art of communicating through letter writing.  It occurs each year on the second week of January.  Although this notice is a few days late, there is still plenty of time to participate by writing someone a letter. Perhaps there’s a thank you note leftover from the holidays that you need to write. Or, maybe that idea of writing a letter of appreciation appeals to you. What a marvelous way that would be to create a keepsake letter. It might even get posted on the refrigerator!

In last week’s New York Times’ “The Happiness Challenge,” Day #4 suggests writing a “Living Eulogy.” Here is a chance to write something very heartfelt. Think about someone important in your life and what they have done for you…Now, here is the exercise explained-

“Consider what you would thank this person for if you thought you would never see them again. Take a few minutes and write down what you would tell them, with as many specific examples as possible. Don’t overthink it: It can be both dashed off and straight from the heart. Think of it as a eulogy for the living.

Then send it — as a handwritten note  (for Universal Letter Writing Week)

The happiest people take time to explicitly cherish the people they love, Dr. Waldinger said. Writing a note of appreciation to someone, has an immediate positive impact on feelings of well-being and connectedness, for both you and the recipient.

“Something that holds a lot of people back from reaching out is that they might be wondering, ‘Is it weird that I’m reaching out after all this time? What are they going to think?’” said Peggy Liu, an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School of Business, who led a 2022 study in which participants sent a short note to someone in their social circle with whom they hadn’t interacted in a while. “But the recipients aren’t thinking about that. They’re thinking, ‘Someone has taken the time to reach out. They thought about me.’”   – NYT, Jancee Dunn 1/4/23

A handwritten letter is a powerful tool for deep connection and positive feelings. This week offers an opportunity to join with a global community to pick up the pen and connect with someone by writing them a letter. It’s a win/win because chances are you will both feel better for doing it.
